HAM/TSP

HLTV-1 Associated Myelopathy / Tropical Spastic Paraparesis

What is HAM/TSP?

HTLV-1 Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the spinal cord caused by HTLV-1.

It affects the nervous system and can lead to progressive disability over time.

What causes HAM/TSP?

HAM/TSP occurs when the immune system reacts against HTLV-1 infected cells, causing inflammation and damage within the spinal cord.

Only a small percentage of people with HTLV-1 develop HAM/TSP.

Common symptoms

Symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen over years.

Leg
weakness

Muscle stiffness/spasticity

Difficulty
walking

Balance
problems

Chronic

How is HAM/TSP diagnosed?

Diagnosis usually involves:

01

HTLV-1 blood testing

02

Neurologic examination

03

MRI imaging

04

Exclusion of other neurologic disorders

05

Lumbar puncture/spinal fluid analysis
Evaluation by neurologists experienced in neuroimmunologic diseases is often helpful.

Treatment Options

There is currently no definitive cure for HAM/TSP, but treatment may help reduce inflammation and slow progression.
Some patients may qualify for clinical trials investigating novel therapies.

Rehabilitation and quality of life

Comprehensive care may include:
Early supportive care can significantly improve quality of life and independence.

Living with HAM/TSP

Many individuals with HAM/TSP continue active and meaningful lives with appropriate medical care and rehabilitation support.

Education, family support, and multidisciplinary care are essential parts of long-term management.
